WELCOME TO CM ON THE PRAIRIE!

Come on in! This is a place where you can connect with other homeschoolers in Minnesota and surrounding areas who are using or maybe just thinking about using Charlotte Mason's methods. Feel free to ask questions, share stories or start a discussion in the Forum. Small groups and co-ops can use this site to keep their groups updated and in touch with each other. We plan to have a cornucopia of resources, links, events and other helps for you. Come alongside others in your area as we implement Mason's methods together!

While there are many CM resources all over the Internet, we want to hear what CMers in our region are doing. We want to highlight the where, what, and how of CM education in Minnesota and our next-door neighbors. Your input and participation will be a valuable asset - so please contribute!

Beginning a Charlotte Mason Education (Or How to Begin Your Journey Into Delightful Living) by Gladys Schaefer

Inquiries Angel, a beautiful young mom, very pregnant with their second child, caught me after class to ask me about homeschooling.  I started gushing about Charlotte Mason. Their first child, a five year old, is one of the delights of our church. His joy in life and his easy ability to make friends with any [...]

The Gypsy’s Garden by Hannah Schaefer Ezell

Hello sweet friends! I hope that this thought finds you each well and happy as we come to the ending of another school year and the beginning of a new free-learning period that is summertime. As I look back over this school year, I have to say that I am considerably more learned than I [...]

The Beauty of Aesthetics by Lori Lawing

ON May 2, 2012 The Scream (one of Edvard Munch’s four originals) sold for $120 million at Sotheby’s.  Why?  What is it about this painting?  Is it the haunting expression of the androgynous figure? The wispy curves of the face and fiord?  The blood-red sky?  Whatever it is, it strikes me.  Something is going on [...]

Sally Almodovar replied to Charissa MacInnis's discussion how to develop abstract thinking
"Charissa - Can you make the Friday morning book discussion of Vol. 1?  I hope so!  It would be great to see you, plus I think you will find the answer to this question by digging into her own words.  We will be meeting at the Windom…"

Charissa MacInnis replied to Charissa MacInnis's discussion how to develop abstract thinking
"Thank you Nancy and Melissa! So sometimes we look for concrete things to help explain or connect to the abstract that we already have recognized. Sometimes learning starts with concrete and leads to abstract, and sometimes it's the other way…"

Melissa Holmberg replied to Charissa MacInnis's discussion how to develop abstract thinking
"Thanks, Nancy. I was trying to think of some examples where the opposite would be true, but wasn't coming up with them. I agree that children do sometimes learn the abstract first - then through their experiences, whether hands-on, listening,…"

Nancy Kelly replied to Charissa MacInnis's discussion how to develop abstract thinking
"I think we need to be careful in assuming that learning starts with concrete and moves to the abstract.  Humans are more complicated than that.  Let's take God, for instance.  Learning about him is about as abstract as you can…"

Charissa MacInnis replied to Charissa MacInnis's discussion how to develop abstract thinking
"Thank you Melissa! I really appreciate you helping me think through this. So maybe making sure my kids have good first hand experience with many concrete things, outside (and wherever we are) is the good foundation on which to tack  ideas…"

Melissa Holmberg replied to Charissa MacInnis's discussion how to develop abstract thinking
"Well, thinking about my preschooler, I'd say he's been developing abstract thinking through the books we read, through what he listens to when others are having conversations, and through the questions he asks (and then the consequential…"

Charissa MacInnis replied to Charissa MacInnis's discussion how to develop abstract thinking
"Ok, so along with experience/observation, ideas and habbits are foundational also.  Thank you, I wasn't sure when idea's came in.  So if kids (lets say preschoolers) get experience by being outside - or where ever the…"

Melissa Holmberg replied to Charissa MacInnis's discussion how to develop abstract thinking
"I must preface with the fact that I haven't read all the volumes yet. While CM definitely wanted children experiencing things, she also wanted them to be exposed to a feast of ideas and to let them ponder those ideas & make their own…"
